Current Studio Collection
Arizona is a 16” x 20” original realist oil painting by Houston artist Timothy Chappell. Executed in the rich, dramatic tradition of Old Master chiaroscuro, this still life features a traditional white ceramic wedding vase—a symbol of unity and balance—resting on a textured Southwestern woven rug. Beside it lies a bundle of white sage, adding an element of organic warmth to the composition.
The piece is a study in contrasting textures: the smooth, matte finish of the clay against the coarse, intricate weave of the wool. Painted in the "Old Master" style, the dramatic lighting (chiaroscuro) draws the eye to the gentle curves of the pottery while letting the background recede into deep, atmospheric shadow.
Inspiration: Part of the 2026 "Legacy" collection, this painting draws inspiration from the Native American pottery collected by the artist's family in Arizona. It was completed as a meditation on healing and focus.

Painted in the classical "Old Master" style, it is a study in contrasting textures: the smooth, matte finish of the clay against the coarse, intricate weave of the wool. The dramatic chiaroscuro lighting draws the eye to the gentle curves of the pottery while letting the background recede into deep, atmospheric shadow.

Progress — Classical Still Life Fine Art Canvas Print
The Story Behind the Art
This striking still life captures a quiet moment of transformation and the passage of time. The composition features a brilliantly red, partially peeled apple resting alongside a classic wooden-handled paring knife on a highly reflective surface. The curling, continuous apple peel adds a sense of graceful movement and unfolding narrative to the piece.
Painted in a classical "Old Master" style, the artwork is a study in texture and dramatic lighting. The sharp, cold steel of the blade contrasts beautifully with the soft, organic curves of the fruit, while the deep, warm chiaroscuro lighting casts a moody, atmospheric shadow against the golden-toned background. It is a bold, timeless piece perfect for a kitchen, dining room, or study.

"The Mother's Son" is a deeply personal modern take on the classical Vanitas tradition. Rich in symbolism and chiaroscuro lighting, the composition features a human skull, a stack of antique leather-bound books, and a brightly burning candle in a brass holder. A silver chain and a skeleton key rest purposefully above a locked wooden drawer.
Every element in this piece serves as an internal portrait of the artist. The skull represents the fragility of human health and mortality. The books symbolize a lifelong, relentless desire for knowledge. The candle serves as the enduring light of faith, while the skeleton key represents the soul—unlocking the mysteries that lie within the guarded drawer.
Technically, the piece explores the "Old Master" method of optical mixing. Rather than relying on smooth gradients, the painting utilizes distinct, confident brushstrokes that allow the viewer's eye to naturally blend the colors and textures from a distance.
