The Art of Stillness
I am a realist oil painter based in Houston, Texas, dedicated to the classical tradition of still life and the pursuit of light in darkness. My work is an exploration of texture, time, and the profound beauty found in everyday objects.
My artistic practice is driven by a deep sense of urgency and purpose born from a lifetime of medical battles. Born in the 1970s with Transposition of the Great Arteries, I underwent the Mustard procedure and received my first pacemaker at age one. Growing up, I was often told my survival was unlikely. This constant proximity to mortality fueled a rebellious youth and a life lived as if there were no future, but it also ignited a relentless creative spark. From training with a former Disney animator at age eight to experimenting with the earliest versions of digital art on floppy disks, creation became my survival mechanism.
My professional journey took me from the early days of gaming—working at GameStop to break into the industry—to roles at EA Mythic and Istation, where I developed art for education. Today, I lead global XR (Virtual Reality) training initiatives for ExxonMobil, using 3D skills to save lives in high-risk environments.
However, my true calling remains the canvas. In 2021, I survived a catastrophic cardiac event where my defibrillator fired multiple times to bring me back from ventricular tachycardia. Two years later, a severe septic infection targeted the hardware in my body, forcing open-heart surgery to remove decades-old pacemaker leads. I survived the infection and the surgery, though I continue to live with heart failure.
These trials have clarified my mission: to return to my artistic roots and build a legacy for my wife and six children. My goal is to use art to show light in darkness—to demonstrate the path from pain and suffering to joy and eternal blessings.
